WELCOME TO GALSWA
GALSWA welcomes members from all colours of the sexual and gender diversity rainbow and our allies. Our motto is ‘Harmony in Diversity’.
GALSWA is an incorporated body hence operates under a Constitution. Our members agree to abide by the aims of GALSWA which are to:
- promote and develop the presence of a Gay and Lesbian choir in Perth
- encourage choral music skills in the Gay and Lesbian community
- be open to all who agree to abide with the rules of GALSWA
- encourage members to participate in GALSWA activities
- provide a supportive and non-discriminatory environment which fosters musical and social interaction
- promote pride in, and a positive image of a Gay and Lesbian lifestyle
When and where are the rehearsals?
Rehearsals are 7pm – 9:15 pm every Thursday night at the Royal Park Hall, 180 Charles Street, West Perth (Corner of Vincent Street). Rehearsals include a short break for coffee or tea and socialising.
Which part/section should I join?
If you are unsure which section of the choir to sing in, the parts (from highest voices to lowest) are Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. Don’t be afraid to try different sections of the choir to see where your voice best fits. If you are really not sure which part to sing, then speak with the Musical Director (Conductor).
Where do I get the music?
Our Music Librarian has sets of the current material which will be loaned to you to at rehearsals when you are just visiting. Please return this music to the Music Librarian at the end of the rehearsal. When you join the choir, you will be provided copies of the music that you can take home for practising outside of rehearsals. This will be supplied in a plastic storage box to help you keep the music in good shape.
All music and storage boxes issued to choir members are the property of GALSWA and must be returned when requested by the committee.
To perform, you need to attend the final four rehearsals, unless you have discussed your situation with the Musical Director (Conductor). We expect you to take the time to learn all songs so you can perform them with confidence. If you are not confident with any particular number, we ask that you discuss this with the Musical Director (Conductor).
GALSWA have a polo shirt and a dress shirt that we wear at various performances. The casual polo shirt is worn for less formal performances like Fair Day. Our black dress shirt is worn at more formal performances like Fringe Festival, Perth Concert Hall and our end of year concert. The dress shirt is not compulsory for members however we do heavily subsidise the polo shirt and would like you to purchase one if you wish to perform with GALSWA. Cost to members is only $20 for the polo shirt and $45 for the dress shirt.
Yes, I want to sign up!
When you decide to join the choir, you will need to:
1. Fill in the GALSWA Membership Form.
2. Pay the Annual Membership fee to the Treasurer who will sign off on your membership form.
3. Pay the applicable Term Fee (full or concessional membership).
The Annual Membership Fee is primarily used for the purchase of music but may be applied to general choir overheads. Payment of the Annual Membership Fee is a condition of membership.
Term fees are also collected for each semester. These help cover additional costs such as hall hire, musical director, accompanist, etc. Each semester is about 5 months long, with Semester 1 generally from February through June and Semester 2 from July through November. (Note, however, there is often a rehearsal or concert in early December.)
Pro-rata semester fees are assessed if you join part way through a semester. Instalment payments may also be negotiated with the Treasurer if it is difficult for you to pay the fee in full at the start of the semester.
Member fees only partly cover choir expenses. Fundraising and paid performances are also very important income sources. The choir therefore relies on its members to actively assist with fundraising activities and concert ticket sales to cover remaining costs. If you are unable to participate in fundraising you can also pay an optional contribution towards our fundraising targets.
Annual Fee - $40
Semester Fees - $220 ($180 concessional)
Fees are set at the Annual General Meeting, which is usually held in early February each year. Although fee increases are always kept to a minimum, fees may change as a result of decisions at the AGM. Please request confirmation of the fees if you have concerns.
If you have any questions about the fees, or if you have any difficulties meeting the financial requirements please talk to the Treasurer. We will do our best to work out an arrangement that allows you to be a member of GALSWA.
If you have any problems or queries, just ask one of the Committee Members who will be more than happy to help you out. email@example.com
